A huge thanks to all of you came out to our last Church, my Style with Kim Barnouin!
We are working hard to plan our next ‘service’ in Spring 2012. In the meantime, if you have any feedback for us or a suggestion of who you would like to see at a future Church, my Style, let us know via email.

The Why by Kim Flanagan

Why Church? Church was born out of pure frustration. Frustration with myself, my life, my business and the business of trying to keep it all together by myself. With my business growing, my frustrations grew as I realized that I was not the only one. I was in the closets of women feeling like I too was ‘in the closet.’ Overwhelmed and maybe a bit lost. What happened? Who am I? How do I find her? Where did this body come from? What do I wear?

What I realized is, it’s not about the clothes, it’s about you, the feeling of you. We, as women need to get back to the instinct of feeling “it”, whatever your “it” is. Finding your “it”? Church. I had the idea of Church when I was sick. I was tired and not feeling “it” or really anything. I was wiped out, and in the closets of other wiped out women and thought to myself, “this is bullshit!” I wanted a mentor or some release or some something that I was missing. I also wanted to get or give the feeling of “it” back to more than one woman at a time and also back to myself.

I had a fire-starter session with Danielle LaPorte and my “it” was realized again. I gave myself a gift and the gift was me, the real me. Scary, I know, but don’t you want your kids to know their real mommy? Not someone else’s mommy or our perception of perfect wife, perfect mother, perfect friend, perfectly successful, blah blah. Perfect is boring and none of us are perfect, thank god! I’m grateful to Danielle for igniting the fire that I knew I had, but had burnt out, and I would like to “gift” her and the gentle kick-ass of her to you.

Danielle confirmed what I knew, but was nervous to do: be the ‘style preacher.’ The idea of Church was born. When I went into the hospital, I started reading Kelly Cutrone’s, “If You Have To Cry, Take It Outside.” (working on bringing her here…) and it confirmed the idea of Church. It was crazy. Crazy awesome. Here’s why: Quote from the book.

I’m asking you to start the church of you. I want you to refuse to pray or play at places that won’t let you speak or where your gender has no power. Or, fine, if you really have to go to these places, go with the intention of transforming them. I want you to fearlessly pursue your dreams and your destiny, conscious that you are not what you do, listening to your inner voice, refusing to let superficial things define you, asking yourself the hard questions about what you believe and what will serve, fighting the fears in your own mind, and finally, loving other women in the process.

Whew and Woot! It’s up to us ladies, we need to kick the ass in the world, we have the power, we just need to be reminded. I will remind you, not perfectly, just my style. I hope to see you at an upcoming Church, my Style for a full brunch and runway fashion show and maybe a little “it” finding. That’s a rocking Sunday! XKim
